My Journey with the Missouri Photographers Association (MOPPA): A Journey of Growth and Connection
The Turning Point: Joining MOPPA and Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
Becoming a member of the Missouri Photographers Association (MOPPA) was a key moment in my photography journey, and it all started in 2022. My friend Debbie, a long-time member, practically stalked me (in the most loving way possible) until I gave in and joined. She shared so many great things about MOPPA, and I could see how much she loved being part of it. I figured, why not? So, I took the leap.
From Nervous Newcomer to Board Member: My MOPPA Journey
MOPPA quickly became a place where I could stretch my legs, step out of my comfort zone, learn, and push myself. My first experience was at the annual local conference. I remember walking in, feeling nervous and unsure. I only knew a handful of people and wasn’t sure what to expect. But as the weekend went on, I connected with new friends, had meaningful conversations, and slowly got hooked.
From then on, I attended every local meetup, participated in meetings, and engaged with members in our Facebook group. MOPPA became a supportive community where I could grow as a photographer and contribute to something bigger.
Before I knew it, Debbie—now our president—asked me if I wanted to be on the board. Without hesitation, I said yes. I’m so glad I did because it’s been incredibly rewarding. Two years later, I’m just as passionate about being part of MOPPA, volunteering, and serving on the board. It’s put me in the same room with talented photographers, and I sometimes still think, “How is this real?”
Growing Through MOPPA: Classes, Challenges, and New Opportunities
Being a member of MOPPA has done so much for me professionally and personally. I’ve taken various classes—both in person and virtual—that helped shape my photography and broaden my skills. Additionally, being part of this motivated community encouraged me to challenge myself in ways I never thought possible. One challenge was deciding to pursue my Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation. It’s something I never would have considered before, but MOPPA gave me the confidence to go for it and grow as an artist.
The Power of Community: How MOPPA Transformed My Photography Career
Looking back, joining MOPPA was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The friendships I’ve built, the knowledge I’ve gained, and the opportunities to stretch myself are priceless. I can’t wait to see what the future holds with MOPPA, and I encourage any photographer—whether just starting out or a seasoned pro—to consider joining. It’s a community that will push you, support you, and inspire you in ways you never expected.
